What is the DAIR Group?

At The DAIR Group, we are dedicated to turning our vision of a better world into reality. We believe that the most significant challenges in international development require solutions that are not only innovative but also deeply rooted in the communities they serve. Our name reflects our core methodology: we combine practical Development and on-the-ground Action with forward-thinking Innovation and evidence-based Research.

Our Mission

The DAIR (Development, Action, Innovation, Research) Group develops projects, innovations, and research in international development that drive transformative, inclusive, and sustainable change for people and the planet. This work is transdisciplinary and co-created with the communities and partners we engage.

Our Purpose Drives Our Projects

The DAIR Group was founded on a clear vision: a more just, prosperous, and sustainable world. We believe that the greatest challenges require more than just solutions; they require deep partnership, relentless innovation, and a commitment to empowering communities from the ground up.

Current Initiatives & Projects

From empowering local economies to ensuring access to essential services, our work is making a tangible difference.

Made by Women: a Fish for Life Iniciative

This innovative project addresses critical nutrition and livelihood challenges by supporting women to design, produce, and market a nutrient-rich fish powder. By up-cycling an underutilized local fish species, women entrepreneurs are creating a new, affordable food supplement that directly benefits the health of women and children. “Made by Women” is more than a product; it’s a women-led value chain that builds economic independence, leadership, and a healthier future for Bolivian families.

Key Impacts
  • A new, women-led value chain from production to marketing.

  • Improved nutrition for women and children through a locally produced food supplement.
  • Creation of a new, sustainable income stream for women aquaculturists.
  • Empowerment of women as business leaders and community innovators.

Improving WASH for Healthcare Facilities and Women’s Health: Testing the STREAMS Approach in Malawi

Royal Roads University and its partner Transform International (Canada) tested an innovative solution to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in healthcare facilities (HFC) in Malawi, specifically for women since they constitute the majority of the HCF users, often for delivery and postpartum recovery. This project focused on the STREAMS (systems, training, education, and monitoring support) approach by combining WASH best practices and two circuit riders to implement, support and sustain WASH infrastructure and improved behaviours and practices.

Key Impacts
  • Improved access to safe water and sanitation in critical facilities.
  • Strengthened community capacity for managing and maintaining WASH infrastructure.
  • Enhanced public health and reduced risk of waterborne diseases.
  • Empowerment of women as key agents in hygiene promotion and system management.

Fish for Life: Empowerment and Sustainability

“Fish for Life” is a pioneering initiative transforming the aquaculture sector in Bolivia by empowering local communities with the skills and knowledge for sustainable fish farming. Through comprehensive technical training, we equip women and men to become leaders in responsible aquaculture management. With women as leaders, this project not only boosts local economies and improves food security but also fosters environmental stewardship by implementing practices that protect vital aquatic ecosystems for generations to come.

Key Impacts
  • Empowerment of rural communities through technical training.
  • Promotion of sustainable and environmentally responsible aquaculture.
  • Creation of new economic opportunities and strengthened local value chains.
  • Strengthened by key partnerships with national and international institutions.
  • Empowerment of women as leaders

Fish for Life II

Fish for Life is a collaborative initiative, forged as a robust alliance between a variety of institutions from both Bolivia and Canada. This partnership is specifically designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities within Bolivia’s small-scale fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The primary objective of Fish for Life is to strengthen and empower this vital sector. This involves a multi-faceted approach, focusing on enhancing the capacity of local communities and small-scale producers. A key component of this strengthening process is the introduction and implementation of Good Production and Environmental Practices. By integrating these sustainable methods, the alliance aims to not only boost productivity and economic viability but also ensure the long-term ecological health of aquatic ecosystems in Bolivia. This ultimately contributes to improved livelihoods and food security for countless individuals and families who depend on fishing and aquaculture.

Empowering one person empowers a community.
